A new wine for us, and first time in New Zealand - a wonderful deep and concentrated red made from vines all over 100 years old!
Fitou is a core appellation in the South of France- a subregion of the Corbières in Languedoc.  The wines here are quite similar to Corbières, except for a higher dominance of the Carignan grape, and the reds must have a minimum of 40% Carignan. This gives the wine a rustic power compared to more Grenache driven wines.
Mont Tauch is a Co-Op winery in Fitou that covers an enormous 5000 tiny plots of vines, spread across 1000 hectares in four different villages.  The 'Vignes Centenaires' comes from two small parcels, one planted in Carignan, and the other in Grenache - unique in that all of the vines are over 100 years old.  For both of these grape varieties, vine age brings a concentration of flavour that is unmatched in other wines.  If you like dense and rich smooth reds, this is an absolute beauty.
