Jaffelin Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes
Classic Red Burgundy from Gevrey-Chambertin in the Cote de Nuits.
Jaffelin considers themselves the 'smallest of the great Burgundy houses. They produce 45 different wines in small volumes, 9th in size in Burgundy. Roughly half their wines are made in their 12th Century cellars immediately adjacent to the Cathedral in the centre of Beaune.
Gevrey wines generally display good tannic structure, making them excellent for laying down. The grapes come from a parcel facing directly east and situated below Château de Brochon. Here, the soils are deeper, resulting in very fruity wines.
100% Pinot Noir. The grapes are picked and sorted by hand. Maceration lasts for 3-4 weeks with the extraction carried out mainly by punching down operations (pigeage). The wines are aged for 16-18 months in French oak barrels, of which around 40% are new.
Pale colour, alight in body but complex, simultaneously delicate yet powerful. Mint cassis, game, pepper. Very nice wine.
