Grower Champagne Experience
Most Champagne is produced by a small number of very large Champagne Houses. Think Moet and Veuve Clicquot. This is mostly exported all over the world, especially to USA, UK, and beyond. Champagne region has a stagging 16,000 different grape growers, and a big number of those grow grapes to sell to those large Champagne brands.
Within France however, half of Champagne sold is from small family owned Champagne producers. We call these 'Grower Champagnes'. They typically come from small hand-tended plots, with great individuality and character rather than mass-produced products that are combined from literally hundreds of different parcels and owners.
We import wines from two such small Growers. Champagne Gallois is in the coveted 'Cotes de Blanc', an area with deep chalky soils that produce elegant and mineral Chardonnay based Champagnes. This pack includes one of each of 3 tiers of Champagne - all 1er Cru quality. A non-vintage wine for starters, moving up to a Vintage Champagne with extra lees maturity, and the premium 'Fut de Chene' matured in oak casks bringing a wonderful complexity to the wine.
The second grower is Champagne Jacques Robin in the more Southern 'Cotes de Bar'. Instead of Chardonnay the wines here are dominated by Pinot Noir due to higher clay influence in the soils. More supple, creamy, and more body rather than the precise minerality of the 'Blanc de Blancs'. Again this pack includes one bottle of each of the three different wines of ascending quality culminating in the Cuvée Kimmeridgienne produced in tiny volumes but of top shelf quality. Similar quality from the big houses would easily cost double this or more!
