Italian wines (and most European wines) are made in a legal structure strictly defined by geography, grape variety, and 'tipicity'... that is to say a wine should taste like the place it comes from. Where France has 3 tiers of quality in their appellations, Italy goes further with a fourth one on top, reserved for wine regions that have demonstrated the ability to produce consistently high quality wines across many years. These are the 'DOCG' - Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, and represent a small but coveted portion of Italian wine.
If in doubt, look for the official DOCG barcoded tag around the neck of the bottle.
We've chosen three of our famous DOCG quality wines- a top tier Chianti Classico Riserva, Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva, and the oldest of the DOCG appellations... Barolo.
