The oldest and best sub-region is 'Chianti Classico', a step up in quality from 'Chianti'. In order to bear this marque of quality, the Riserva there are higher minimum aging standards again from the Classico requirements: the wine spends a minimum of two years and have higher minimum alcohol standards again compared to Classico. Like Chianti Classico it must also have a minimum of 80% Sangiovese.
This is an excellent example from Fattorio Montecchio - a family winery in Tuscany between Florence and Siena.
Made from 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet. A modern style featuring plenty of oak, the Cabernet notes also showing through nicely with mint and eucalypt aromas. Concentrated darker fruit core framed with subtle toasty notes and supple tannins.
