One of the most famous kinds of wine in Hungary comes from the town of Eger in Northern Hungary - with a history that goes back hundreds of years.

Egri Bikaver translates to 'Bulls Blood' - a tale from the Ottoman Siege of the Eger fortress where heavily outnumbered Hungarian soldiers defeated the invading mercenaries.  It was said that they fought fortified with the blood of bulls, their beards and tunics stained red by their rations of the hearty local red wines.

Bikaver has come a long way since the 'bad old days' in the socialist era where Bulls Blood was created in vast quantities but very low quality (and an extremely low price).  Transformed initially by the famous winemaker Gal Tibor, these wines are now savoury full bodied dry red wines.  Consider them akin to a Bordeaux style red with a savoury and spicy character, ideal with a hearty stew or grilled red meats & cheeses.
