While the town of Asti is known for the sweet sparkling muscat wines, it also produces red wine from Italy's number 3 red grape: Barbera.  The appellation Barbera d'Asti is a defined geographical area, distinguished from the nearby Barbera d'Alba. The Asti climate is cooler and results in a fresher acidity than the Alba versions.  The appellation was elevated to DOCG status in 2008, demonstrating the consistently high quality of the wines.

The 'Superiore' demarcation is quite new, only allowed since year 2000, with higher minimum production standards. It must also be aged in either oak or chestnut barrels for a smoother and rounder taste.  The Abbazia version is made from older vines, offering a clear step up from the entry tier Barbera. Aromas of roasted red fruits, showing significant oak influence with a rich mid palate, cherry and vanilla . 

Casa Vinicola Abbazia winery is located in Santo Stefano Belbo, a small town between Langhe Monferrato and Roero in Piedmont, Northwestern Italy. The winery was established in 1848, adjacent to an ancient Abbey built in 1028, in honour of Saint Gaudentius, the hermit saint who, around the 6th century, retired to the surrounding mountains to live a life of silence and prayer.
