The Rhone wine region offers up two distinct styles of red wines between the North and South. By far the largest of the two is the South, dominated by generous Grenache blends, the pinnacle of which being Chateauneuf du Pape. This example really personifies what the appellation- sumptuous rich red fruits from the Grenache tempered with some backbone from Syrah, and added spiciness from a little Mourvedre added to the mix. The original 'GSM' blend.
The Northern Rhone is famous for their reds made from straight Syrah, this is a true expression of the grape in its native environment (the stories of Syrah coming from Persia are proven to be myth). A style that shows the sophistication of the grape, and drinking beautifully well now.
