Domaine des Houdières Fleurie Beaujolais
The best 10 villages in Beaujolais are the ‘Cru’ wines of the region, and labelled not as ‘Beaujolais’ but just the name of the village – in this case “Fleurie”. The soils in the Cru villages are granite rather than clay for the rest of the region, and grown on slopes that make for a more serious and concentrated wine. Fleurie is considered the most aromatic and floral of the Beaujolais, but ironically Fleurie is named for a Roman General Floricum rather than anything to do with flowers!
The wine is intensely purple-ruby coloured, aromas of sweet cherry, jasmine, black roses, and baked fruit. Savoury on the palate with good intensity and a savoury dry mineral finish. Drink now or cellar for the next three years.
